Ski Beech and Sugar Mountain ski resorts are only 15 minutes away. With a peak elevation of 5,300 feet, a vertical drop of 1,200 feet, a longest run of 1 1/2 miles and 115 skiable acres, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort are the largest ski area in North Carolina. Come test out your skiing and snowboarding skills, or hit the tubing slope for all around family fun!

Theater

Lees McRae College is 15 minutes away in Banner Elk and offers live theatre performances suitable for all ages.

The Blowing Rock Stage Company, a scenic 45 minute drive away, is devoted to presenting revivals of popular plays and musicals that have sustained us since our beginnings and to the exploration and development of new works that celebrate the culture and heritage of our region.

Indoor & Outdoor Activities

Just 5 miles away is Roan Mountain State Park offering many outdoor activities. Just a couple miles away is Elk River Falls where you will find picnic areas, hiking, swimming and fishing opportunities.Also, golfing is available to the public only 7 minutes away at Mountain Glen Golf Course.

Don't forget to visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain, only 20 minutes away! The zoo at Grandfather Mountain also offers an adventurous excursion for kids of all ages.

Access to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is only 20 minutes away. Visit the Parkway to take in breath taking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains with views into Southern NC, Tennessee and Virginia!

Many activities are offered in Avery County throughout the year, including craft fairs, the famous Highland Games each July at Grandfather Mountain and the Wooly Worm Festival each October in Banner Elk. Plus for the ladies, Linville and Banner Elk offer various spa services! 

If you're a Nascar fan, you'll want to visit nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, home of the fastest  half mile.
